At the heart of the work we do at New Beginnings is encouraging youth voice in as many different aspects of our programs as possible. This includes creating spaces and opportunities for them to simply feel heard with unconditional positive regard. The folks who have spent time here from Spiritual Care Services of Maine have been critical in showing up for our youth as well as staff in a supportive, non-judgmental way. They have been able to build relationship with youth and staff that feels accessible, unconditional, and available as needed. They have shown up for the New Beginnings community in times of great trauma as well as in times of happiness and celebration. We look forward to maintaining this highly beneficial relationship going forward.

Chaplains from Spiritual Care Services of Maine have been coming to our Spurwink Living Room crisis center on a regular basis for the past year or so, which has been such a blessing! They are a consistent, compassionate presence for people who are desperately in need of a sense of belonging and connection. They are active listeners who know how to make people feel cared for, heard and seen. We are incredibly grateful that they are a part of our care team here.

SCS Maine has been an important partner in providing safe, quality, and person-centered quarantine services for individuals accessing care related to COVID-19. A vital part of quarantine and isolation success is connecting individuals to social emotional supports. Having chaplaincy services visit the Quarantine Shelter and provide social emotional support to guests, allows for individuals to feel less isolated, process challenging situations, and feel connected to another person. This resource is an extremely important and vital tool for the success of guests at the Quarantine Shelter!

Because of Covid, none of the volunteers at Knox County Jail were allowed into the facility to offer support groups or Bible Study. One day my boss, Chief Deputy Polky forwarded me an email that was reaching out to staff because of COVID to support residents. I reached out to Lori at Spiritual Care Services of Maine and she set up Zoom Bible Studies for the women and men residing at the jail. She even sent along Bible so they could take them. I appreciated it very much and the residents did too. This was an awesome adventure for me with SCS Maine and will never forget what they did for the people here.

Through the state of Maine COVID-19 community care program, Maine State Department of Health and Human Services has had the opportunity to work with SCS Maine. They have been a great value for our referral system serving thousands of Maine that were affected by Covid-19 as cases and contacts. They provide outreach into households in crisis and information to support people and their work. It has been an invaluable support in the COVID-19 response.
— Sharon McDonnell, MD, MPH, Director, Maine DHHS COVID-19 Social Support and Community Care DHHS Commissioner’s Office
SCS Maine has been a valuable collaborator and resource with Maine Community Action Partnership (MeCAP) during Covid-19 pandemic. They have jumped at every chance to collaborate and share resources. SCS played a crucial role in the planning and execution of a state-wide forum for and by faith leaders addressing the challenges for clergy and parishioners during the pandemic. SCS are wonderful contributors and partners when discussing how to support people in distress! Their willingness to help has been terrific.
