About SCS

Chaplains are often found in institutions such as hospitals, hospice, and the military to help people navigate the complexities of life events.

Spiritual Care Services of Maine has expanded chaplain care into the communities of Maine where we are needed, when we are needed.

Our Vision

The vision of SCS Maine is that everyone and anyone who needs our help will find compassion, comfort, assistance, and hope.

Our Chaplains

Our chaplains have had advanced religious or spiritual training and bring a wealth of experience working with various populations in a multitude of settings.

What We Do

We address human suffering by meeting people where they are and accompanying them wherever they are on life's journey.

At SCS Maine, we are always reacting and adapting to the needs of our diverse community.

Spiritual Care Services of Maine was founded in 2021 as a way to connect with and support people suffering from the isolation brought on by the Covid pandemic. With a contract from the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), SCS Maine participated in a referral system which allowed us to provide remote visits to people all over the State of Maine. We also partnered with State and Community-based Organizations to develop and present trainings about spiritual tools, moral resilience, and ways to compassionately address the lingering impacts of the Pandemic within our communities.

Since then, we continue to serve individual and organizational clients through our referral line which has allowed us to hold space remotely for over 1,500 individuals and counting. In addition, we now regularly sending Chaplains into the field.

Here are some of the in-person ways SCS Maine goes to work supporting the citizens of Maine:

  • We support both residents and staff at senior living communities in various ways including "Godly Play" programing at The Cedars which offers meaning making for elderly residents.

  • Since October 2024 we have been an official provider of emotional and spiritual support for StrengthenME, Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services. Our first call of duty was to be available for Mainers affected by the storms of late 2023/early 2024 as we headed into winter 2024/2025.

  • We have maintained a weekly residency at The Living Room allowing those in mental health crisis a listening space while seeking services and community at the resource center.

  • We have operated regular hours at both The Homeless Service Center and New Beginnings providing spiritual care to those experiencing homelessness. In addition, our Chaplains regularly accompanied The Hope Squad, a volunteer organization that does outreach to unhoused people living on the streets or in encampments in Portland.

  • We have provided programming for residents in The Bolduc Correctional Facility.

  • We create educational programing and provide spiritual support to frontline workers dealing with opioid addiction/recovery/prevention/and survivor care.

SCS are wonderful contributors and partners when discussing how to support people in distress! Their willingness to help has been terrific.
